Nature Rev. When properly documented and studied, sex and gender differences are the gateway to precision medicine. The comment, written by Harald Hampel, Maria Teresa Ferretti, and Antonella Santuccione Chadha, highlights the need for sound and rigorous research into sex differences.
Image: Oliver Koemmerling. We're wrapping up Sex Ed Week at Motherboard, and it would be a crime to let it pass by without delving into the kinkiest behaviors in the animal kingdom. There is a huge diversity of seduction tactics in nature, from the diplomatic nymphomania of bonobos to the non-existent libidos of panda bears.
In this construal, which seems to make biological sense, a transgender woman would be a biological male but their gender would be female. Now the editorials that have appeared in scientific journals are well-meaning: their intent is to prevent intersexes and transgender individuals the former much rarer than the latter from discrimination. But that can be done without conflating sex and gender.
Together they argued that sex was fundamentally biological, and not socially constructed, and that there is a difference between women and trans women that needs to be respected. For this, they were given a rousing round of applause by the Trump supporters, religious-right members, natural law theorists, and conservative intellectuals who comprised much of the crowd. The moderator, Ryan Anderson, said they were speaking at Heritage because no similar liberal or leftist institution would give them space or time to make their case. But what interests me is their underlying argument, which deserves to be thought through, regardless of our political allegiances, sexual identities, or tribal attachments.

This week, Luke Turner reflects on the groundbreaking legacy of Derek Jarman. Yet most nature literature I encountered as an adult sanitised the world we see outside of our cities into something tweely pastoral; a form of wildness hygge. I had gone in search of titillation, but found so much more.
The paradox of sex is still enigmatic and regarded as a major unresolved problem in evolutionary biology [ 1 ]. Sex is here understood as a process of organisms in which the genomes of two nuclei are brought together in a common cytoplasm to produce progeny which may then contain reassorted portions of the parental genomes. In eukaryotes, sex involves meiosis-mixis-cycles and is tied to reproduction.
Fausto-Sterling is a pioneering researcher into sex and gender identities, and published controversial work in the early s suggesting that there were at least five different ways of measuring sex — a publication which is not mentioned at all in the Nature article. Results will always depend on averages, on statistical norms, or on arbitrary cut-off points, and there will always be people who appear both male or female or neither when all nine kinds of sex are considered. Moore wrote his article in specifically to criticise one form of sex testing: the tests that were being used in international sport to decide whether athletes were eligible to compete as women.
